B is for Bumblebee

Well, it is a new week and that means a new letter and color for my preschoolers. We totally immersed ourselves in the letter “B” today.

We made these cute bumblebees using an idea I found on No Time For Flashcards. The children colored the “B” with yellow crayons, and then I cut them out. We glued them to a blue piece of construction paper and added the wings, stripes, and antennae I already had cut out. This was a fun project for the children.

Here is a finger play I found at The Fifth Street Academy. It went perfectly with our bumblebees.

Baby Bumblebee

I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee,
Won’t my mommy be so proud of me?
(Cup hands together as if holding bee)

I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee,
Ouch! It stung me!
(Shake hands as if just stung)

I’m squishing up the baby bumblebee,
Won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
(‘Squish’ bee between palms of hands)

I’m squishing up a baby bumblebee,
Ooh! It’s yucky!
(Open up hands to look at the mess.)

I’m wiping off the baby bumblebee,
Won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
(Wipe hands off on shirt)

I’m wiping off the baby bumblebee,
Now my mommy won’t be mad at me!
(Hold hands up to show they are clean)

Another “B” activity we completed was to trace capital and lower case letter “B’s” with a blue crayon. Then we put glue in various spots on each letter and the children glued on buttons. This will go in their letter binders. I printed the letter paper from DLTK-Kids.

To encourage fine motor skills the children strung beads onto a blue pipe cleaner to make bracelets. They loved making their blue beaded bracelets. Say that three times fast. :-)

For a snack I had made some frozen chocolate covered banana slices. I simply dipped sliced bananas (on toothpicks) into melted chocolate. I placed them on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet and popped them into the freezer. I called them banana bites to go along with our “B” theme.

I showed the children how to sign the letter “B”. We also reviewed the sign for the letter “A” we learned last week.

We had a great time today and I am excited about doing more blue and “B” activities with the children on Wednesday.
