F is for Fish

Today we continued our study of the letter “F” and the color pink. Here are some of the highlights.

We began with a fish finger play and song. We just made up our own hand motions as we went.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
I caught a fish alive.
6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
Then I threw him back again.

Why did you let him go?
Because he bit my finger so.
Which one did he bite?
The little one on the right.

This next song is from No Time for Flashcards to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot.

I’m a little fishy , watch me go!
I swim fast and I swim slow.
When the day is over , it’s time to sleep
I swim up high and dive down deep.

Next, we read the book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. It is a popular book that focuses on the joys of sharing with others.

After the story we made our own rainbow fish using a template I created (See info at bottom of this post.). I printed it on cardstock and the children used watercolors to paint the shapes. When the papers were dry I cut them out and the children glued the pieces together and added a wiggly eye. To finish our rainbow fish we glued on one piece of aluminum foil to represent the one shiny scale the rainbow fish had left at the end of the story.

While the children had on their paint shirts I let them paint their folders (I will share more about their folders on Friday.) with feathers. We used pink paint since that is our color of the week.

We also used feathers to decorate their letter “Ff” papers from DLTK-Kids. First, the children traced the letters. Then they used glue to put feathers on the letters. These will go in their alphabet binders.

We had a great morning learning about the letter “F”. Tomorrow I will be sharing another Real Life Learning idea with you. Have a great day!

If you are interested in making a rainbow fish using the template I created you may download it or print it. The template is free for personal use; however, you are not allowed to post the template on your website. You may link to my site so that others may download the template. Thank you.
